Making Your Selection
The considerations listed below that determine the overall ride quality and overall enjoyment of your new machine have to be understood and taken into account when making your careful bike buying decisions. The objective is to strike a great balance of handling, comfort and efficiency.
OPTIMISED FIT
This is the most important considerations. Having a professional fit evaluation will not only save you the time, money and heartache of purchasing a wrongly sized bicycle, but it will place your body in a very efficient position that generates more power, allows you to breath better for more efficient oxygen transfer and makes riding inherently safer with better rider weight distribution and optimized bike handling being the end result.
COMPLIANCE [TORSIONAL AND LATERAL]
Power on demand. We all want it! Sometimes there is the possibility of too much of a good thing when talking about frame stiffness. A bicycle frame has to work with you, not against you, and for every cyclist there is an optimum amount of flexibility or 'windup' makes the frame work with you returning all your energy. Finding the correct amount of windup depends on a number of variables like rider weight, frame size, crank length, cadence etc..
Frames that are too stiff do not feel secure in cornering, and can often suffer from 'wheel skip' and other dangerous traits during difficult cornering with many riders losing bike confidence after such scares.
COMPLIANCE [VERTICAL]
To reduce the amount of shock to the riders body and the overall stress, a bicycle frame must have a certain amount of inherent vertical compliance.
This allows the wheels to stick to rough irregularities on the road surface and maintain traction and correct tracking even in adverse conditions like riding in the wet or along the coarsest of rock aggregate.
Hitting holes in the road can cause 500 or so lbs of vertical force and a well designed bike [especially one that is custom, just for you] will have The correct compliance dialed in for your own personal needs.
VIBRATION CONTROL
A bike that dampens vibrations correctly will enable the rider to finish much stronger on those 'over distance' rides or races. An overly stiff bike will often give the rider a sensation of feeling faster at given speeds, But in overall rider fatigue testing and evaluation this 'sensory overload'
is not the case.
WEIGHT
The most common statistic we see in marketing is 'ethereal' bike weights, As this is great 'spin' for the marketing department boys. Over the years we have ridden many examples of 'superlight' bikes that various riders and companies have shown us that we would never want to do a technical race or ride on, for fear of our and others personal safety. The best Custom manufacturers in the world always have traits like responsiveness and stability as their first objectives and never weight at the top,as these factors have much more of a bearing on how a bike will truly excel for you, rather than just going for the lightest weight which is quite easy to achieve anyway.
LONGEVITY
A beautiful handmade bicycle can last a lifetime when properly cared for.
Each material has its specific strengths, so with careful interpretation of your personal frame material needs including considerations like travel requirements and personal care, your new bike should last indefinitely with the correct material selections.
In a world of cutting edge materials we always recommend only selecting bicycles that stand by their products with a lifetime frame warranty.
GEOMETRY
The geometry of the frame including seat tube length, seat tube angle, bottom bracket height, bottom bracket drop, effective top tube length, fork rake and offset, fork span, front centre, chainstay length, wheelbase, headtube height and angle etc... all determine how well the bike rides for you. With a S.I.C.I. Certified Bike Fit evaluation and thorough evaluation of your personal requirements, you will be cycling efficiently and comfortably for many years to come.
